2025-26 Upper Deck Extended Series Preview: Young Guns, Rookie Chases, and What Collectors Should Watch

Written by Cole Kirkpatrick

Extended Series Might Be More Interesting Than Usual

Upper Deck Extended Series is usually the third act of flagship hockey.

Series 1 gets the early-season hype. Series 2 usually carries the biggest Young Guns chase. Then Extended Series comes in later, and depending on the year, collectors either treat it like a sneaky value product or something they only remember once they realize a key rookie card was hiding in there.

But the 2025-26 Upper Deck Extended Series could be more interesting than usual.

Between the expected Young Guns chase, the potential Canvas Young Guns appeal, update-style cards, and the new NHL Debut Game Jersey concept, this year’s Extended Series has a few real reasons for hockey card collectors to pay attention.

For collectors who love flagship hockey, rookie cards, and the hunt for underrated cards before everyone else catches on, Extended Series is worth watching.

Beckett Sennecke is the Main Young Guns Chase

Beckett Sennecke’s Young Guns will release in 2025-26 Upper Deck Extended Series, and should immediately become one of the headline cards in the product.

Sennecke is not just some random late-checklist rookie name. He was drafted third overall by the Anaheim Ducks in 2024 and had the kind of rookie season that gives his cards real hobby relevance.

He played a major role for Anaheim, finished as a Calder finalist, and tied Matthew Schaefer for the rookie goal-scoring lead with 23 goals.

Matthew Schaefer Canvas Young Guns Is the Big Variation Chase

Matthew Schaefer is the name that gives this product real weight.

Schaefer won the Calder Trophy as the NHL’s top rookie and did it in historic fashion. For a young defenseman to come into the league, put up that kind of season, and immediately become one of the most important rookies in the hobby is a big deal.

His Young Guns from Series 2 currently sell for roughly $225 raw, so it's likely his canvas young guns will push into the $300s, providing plenty of value for gambling ripper addicts.

Canvas Young Guns have built their own following because they feel different. They usually have better photography, a more premium look, and a little more personality than the standard flagship card.

A Schaefer Canvas Young Guns could easily become one of the most desirable cards in 2025-26 Upper Deck Extended Series, especially for collectors who missed out on his main Young Guns or want another flagship-adjacent rookie card to chase.

NHL Debut Game Jersey Cards Add a New Layer

One of the more interesting wrinkles around 2025-26 Upper Deck Extended Series is the expected NHL Debut Game Jersey cards.

If these are executed well, they could give Extended Series something it has not always had: a chase beyond simply “who are the last Young Guns?”

The idea of using swatches from a rookie’s NHL debut jersey is actually pretty cool. It feels more meaningful than a random relic card where nobody really knows or cares what the jersey is tied to.

Debut games matter. They are a real milestone. For collectors, especially player collectors and team collectors, that type of connection can make a memorabilia card feel more personal.

If the checklist is strong and the cards look good, NHL Debut Game Jersey cards could give this product a nice boost. If the design is boring or the checklist is weak, collectors may move on quickly.

Zeev Buium Gets an Update

Zeev Buium is another interesting name to monitor.

His situation is a little different because his earlier Young Guns release was tied to Minnesota, but after being moved to Vancouver, collectors may be interested in update-style cards showing him in a Canucks jersey.

Jacob Fowler Could Be the Sleeper

Personally, Jacob Fowler is one of the names I would keep an eye on.

Goalie cards are always strange in the hobby. Sometimes they sit ignored for years. Sometimes everyone suddenly decides a young goalie is the future and prices move fast.

Fowler is still young, he is tied to Montreal, and Canadiens collectors are not exactly quiet when they believe in one of their guys. With Dobes taking main stage for the Habs for the foreseeable future, as long as Fowler doesn't get traded, he could provide great value for those in it for the long run.

Other Rookie Names Collectors Should Watch

Beyond Sennecke, Schaefer, Buium, and Fowler, collectors should keep an eye on how the final checklist fills out.

Extended Series can be weird that way. Sometimes the most obvious chase cards are known early. Other times, the product gets more interesting once collectors actually see the full checklist, inserts, Canvas cards, update cards, and parallel structure.

Names like Berkeley Catton, Denver Barkey, and other first-round or high-interest prospects could matter depending on how they appear in the product.

That is why this release should be treated as a watchlist product, not just an automatic rip or automatic skip.

Final Thoughts: Is 2025-26 Upper Deck Extended Series Worth Watching?

2025-26 Upper Deck Extended Series probably will not be the flashiest hockey card release of the year. But it might be more interesting than usual.

If the product includes a Beckett Sennecke Young Guns, a Matthew Schaefer Canvas Young Guns, NHL Debut Game Jersey cards, and a few strong update-style rookie cards, then Extended Series could have more collector appeal than people expect.

The big question will be price. Currently, Steel City Collectibles has pre-sale boxes for $250... Yikes...

If boxes are reasonably priced, this could be a fun flagship rip with a few legitimate chase cards. If prices climb too high, collectors may be better off waiting for singles, especially if they are only chasing one or two specific names.

That is usually the truth with Extended Series. It is not always the product everyone talks about first. But every now and then, it becomes the product collectors look back on and say, “Yeah, that card was actually a lot more important than people realized at the time.”

And this year, there are enough rookie storylines to at least pay attention.
